The flexplate connects the engine to the transmission and allows for the expansion of the torques converter under load. It also provides a ring gear for the starter to engage. With all that flexing and torqing loads flexplates do wear out over time. A worn felexplate can cause excessive vibration in the drivetrain and poor starter engagement. ths can eventually caus damage to the engine or the starter. Worn or broken flexplates need to be replaced with a high-quality steel replacemnt balanced and fit to the factory specifications like this one. This standard replacement fits 1965-1976 Ford vehicles that have a C4 automatic transmission, a 289 or 302 engine and a smaller type bellhousing.

Fitment note: C4 transmissions came with 2 different sized bellhousings. The larger bellhousing requires the 164-tooth flexplate, and the smaller bellhousing requires the 157-tooth bellhousing.
